Feeling ashamed?

The toxic belief that we are fundamentally flawed or bad. Unlike guilt (I did something bad), shame says "I am bad"—and this is rarely true.

The unmet need

Separation of our actions from our identity; compassionate witnessing of our humanity; the understanding that mistakes don't define us.

A question to sit with

Am I judging an action or condemning my entire being? How can I hold myself accountable without destroying myself with shame?

What to do right now

Speak shame out loud to one trusted person: "I feel ashamed about..." Shame dissolves in empathy and light. Then say: "I am worthy of love even when I make mistakes."
