Feeling startled?

A momentary hijacking of our nervous system by something unexpected. A survival response that asks: Is this dangerous?

The unmet need

Quick reassurance of safety; the ability to down-regulate once we've assessed there's no real threat.

A question to sit with

Am I still in danger, or is my body just recovering from the shock? What signals safety to my nervous system?

What to do right now

Place both hands over your heart and take slow, full breaths. Look around and name five things you can see. Say aloud: "The surprise has passed. I am safe now. I am here." Allow your nervous system to settle.
